Formula Type: Clear Heat and Stop Bleeding
Actions: Cools the Intestines, stops bleeding, disperses wind. & promotes the movement of qi
Indications: Bright-red bleeding from the rectum during defecation that typically precedes (but may also follow) the passage of stool, blood in the stools, hemorrhoids with either bright-red or dark-red bleeding, a red tongue body, & a wiry, rapid or soggy, rapid pulse.
Contraindications: Because this formula consists of cold herbs, it should not be used long-term & should be used with caution in patients with cold from deficiency of the middle burner.

Actions1. Cools the blood & stops bleeding: widely used for various bleeding disorders including vomiting blood, bleeding gums, coughing of blood, blood in the stool or urine, bloody dysenterial disorders, & uterine bleeding. Owing to its slighlty cold nature, this herb is effectively used in treating patterns of hot blood, but it may also be used with warming herbs for bleeding associated with cold patterns.
2. Stops coughing & expels phlegm: for Lung heat patterns with cough & accumulation of phlegm. Especially important in cases of difficuly to expectorate sputum streaked blood.
3. Promotes healing of burns: used topically in powdered form for the early stages of burns over a small to moderate surface area. |
