Chinese Prescription: Gua Di San
English Translation: Melon Pedicle Powder
Formula Type: Induce Vomiting to Discharge Phlegm
Actions: Discharges phlegm or food stagnation through vomiting.
Indications: Firm areas of focal distention in the chest, anguish & vexation, difficult breathing due to a sensation of qi rushing in to the throat, & a slightly floating pulse at the distal position. This condition is due to either phlegm clogging the chest & diaphragm, or stagnant food lodging in the upper epigastrium.
Contraindications: Because Gua Di is a cold, bitter, & toxic substance that readily injures the Stomach qi & normal qi, this formula should be used with caution in weak patients. It is contraindicated when the phlegm is not lodged in the chest or when stagnant food has already passed into the in testines. If the formula causes unremitting vomiting, administer 0.3-0.6g of Ding Xiang, or one-tenth that amounth of She Xiang.
