Actions

1. Clears heat & cools blood: for heat entering the blood, especially for yin-deficient fever, persistent summertime fever in children, post partum fever, & lingering fever as the sequelae of a warm-febrile disease that injures the blood or yin. Most commonly used for post partum fever & during the recovery stage from a febrile illness. 2 Cools the blood & promotes urination: for hot or bloody painful urinary dysfunction, especially before or after giving birth.

4. Relieve toxicity: for toxic sores, swollen painful throat, & snakebite. For these purposes, it can be taken internally or applied topically.

Cautions

May antagonize huang qi, da huang, da ji, gan jiang, da zao, & shan zhu yu.
