Dosage

9-30g, crush & cook 30 minutes before adding other ingredients

Actions

1. Nourishes the yin & anchors the yang: for yin deficiency with ascendant yang with such symptoms as night sweats, dizziness, tinnitus, & steaming bone disorder. Also for yin deficiency of the Liver & Kidneys that generates internal wind symptoms such as facial spasms & tremors of the hands & feet.

2. Benefits the Kidneys & strengthens the bones: for Kidney yin deficiency with such signs as soreness of the lower back & weakness in the legs, retarded skeletal development in children, or failure of the fontanel to close.

3. Cools blood & stops uterine bleeding: for excessive menstruation or uterine bleeding casued by reckless movement of hot blood.

4. Nourishes the blood & tonifies the Heart: for Heart deficiency with anxiety, insomnia, & forgetfulness.

5. Also for nonhealing sores & ulcerations.

Cautions

Ancient sources would indicate that this substance is contraindicated during pregnancy because it softens hardness, expels stasis, & aids in difficult births. Also contraindicated in cases with damp-cold Stomach, or diarrha due to yang deficiency. According to some traditional sources, this substance antagonizes Sha Shen & Ren Shen.
