Hu Zhang / Knotweed (Bushy) Rhizome

Actions

1. Invigorates the blood & dispels stasis: for amenorrhea, wind-dampness painful obstruction, & traumatic injury.

2. Clears heat & resolves dampness: for damp-heat jaundice & turbid vaginal discharge.

3. Drains heat downward, transforms phlegm, & stops coughing: for cough due to Lung heat. Also for constipation due to clumping of heat.

4. Discharges toxin: for burns, carbuncles, & other skin infections, & snakebite. Usually the fresh ground herb is applied locally for these problems.

Cautions

Contraindicated during pregnancy. Toxicity: hu zhang is a very safe herb. Among the reported side effects from oral administration are dry mouth, bitter taste in the mouth, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, & diarrhea.
