Dosage

0.1-0.2g internal in pill or dissolved in wine, topical as powder or paste

Actions

1. Expels wind & dampness & kills parasites: applied topically for scabies, ringworm & itching sores.

2. Opens the orifices & expels turbidity: this penetrating, aromatic herb has the effect of opening the orifices of the Heart. Taken internally it is used for delerium & sudden loss of consciousnees due to hot disorders.

3. Invigorates the blood & alleviates pain: applied topically for injuries from falls, fractures, contusions, sprains, & the pain & swelling associated with blood stasis.

Cautions

Contraindicated during pregnancy, & in cases of qi deficiency. Always use with caution given internally. Toxicity: In oral doses of 0.5-1.0g can cause dizziness, headache, a feeling of warmth, & restlessness. Over 2g leads to transient tranquilization followed by stimulation of the cerebral cortex with tonic-clonic spasms. Respiratory arrest can occur. Oral administration of 7-15g is fatal.
